Audubon International has awarded the Banff Park Lodge with a Four Green Leaf Rating which indicates “taken a decisive step towards reducing the environmental costs associated with operating the Banff Park Lodge Resort Hotel and Conference Centre”.
As of November 1, 2002, when the hotel was first awarded the Four Green Leaf Rating, there were only fifteen properties in Canada that had achieved this high of a rating and the Banff Park Lodge was the first independent hotel to do so.
The Audubon Green Leaf Eco-Rating Program is a graduated rating system designed to identify hotels which are committed to improving their environmental and cost-savings performance. Green Leaf performance is related to successful application of the principles of eco-efficiency, including energy and water conservation, waste reduction and eco-purchasing, reduction of hazardous material impacts and sound overall management policies.
The Green Key Eco-Rating Program has “awarded the Banff Park Lodge Resort Hotel and Conference Centre a 4 Green Key Rating for 2009”.
A 4 Green Key rating is awarded to a hotel that has shown national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through wide ranging policies and practices. The Hotel has mature programs in place that involve management, employees, guests, and the public, and which have shown substantial and measurable results.
To qualify for the 4 Green Eco-Leaf Rating Banff Park Lodge completed an audit of their property's compliance with over 70 unique eco-initiatives.
Environmentally friendly measures that are reviewed include energy efficiency, water conservation, recycling, environmentally safe cleaning, reduction of waste, ongoing maintenance, purchasing habits, plus many other factors. In its efforts to create a more sustainable travel future and reduce their impact on our environment, Banff Park Lodge employs 33 eco-initiatives.
Waste audits are done 4 times a year, each over a five day period. Results are shared with the department heads and areas of improvement discussed.
We actively recycle the following products through the Town of Banff recycling program: Paper, newspaper, magazines, plastic, cans, glass, cardboard, and (new in July 2009) food composting.
Other products that we recycle using other outlets are: batteries, office equipment, bottles.
You will find a blue recycling bin in your room, low flow shower heads, the Project Planet linen & towel change program that will reduce detergent use and the use of water, energy efficient lighting, furniture that is made locally in Alberta.
Here is a list of some products that we purchase based on their recycling content: Tissues, toilet paper, office paper, napkins, and paper cups. We are proud to have long life bulbs and energy efficient lights in use throughout the hotel.
In 2008 the hotel replaced their 30 year old cedar roof tiles with “Enviroshake roof tile”, made with 95% reclaimed materials such as post industrial plastic(s), recycled rubber elastomers and other fiber materials.
Where possible we use internal e-mail for communication. If an internal document needs to be printed, we either print the document double sided or print it on “once used” paper. Invoices to conferences are sent via e-mail or FTP, preventing mail cost and associated unwanted printed copies. Suppliers are encouraged to send their invoices via e-mail.
